New in town

Welcome to the World Heritage City of Quedlinburg. We are happy to have you as an international citizen in our city and with this section of our website provide you with information in English which you may find useful.

Quedlinburg, the former royal palace and member of the Hanseatic League, is a charming medieval town that is over 1000 years old. Situated on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains, it welcomes visitors with winding alleyways, ancient cobblestones and spacious squares surrounded by half-timbered houses. The city is dominated by the massive sandstone rock with the monastery buildings and the Romanesque St Servatius Church. German history began here over 1,000 years ago.

Welcome meeting

Below you will find the basic requirements that need to be done upon moving to Quedlinburg. If you have more specific questions we gladly help you in the Familycentre of Quedlinburg. Please write to Samantha.mantel@quedlinburg.de or Klaus.mansfeldt@quedlinburg.de

Feel free to write in english, french, or dutch. Otherwise your mothertongue is also alright and we will use google translator. The Familycentre is on the Market Square with the Address "Markt 2". If you stand in front of the Rathaus or Mayor Hall it is on your right hand side before you go through the small tunnel. Whether you have big questions such as registering your child at a school or small questions for example that you are looking for a sport club or activity for yourself or your family, we are happy to help!

Finding local people

When moving to a new area it is not always easy to get in contact with the local people. Perhaps also due to the language barrier. If you are looking to learn German or improve your German, the best way is to pracitice the language with the local people.

For this purpose, if you are pregnant or have small children ages 0-3 years old, the Familycentre has a Parent meet-up or „Krabbelgruppe“ on Mondays from 9:00-10:30 and on Tuesdays from 10:00 – 12:00. It is free of charge without prior registration. All information can be found here.

Otherwise joining a sport club, cultural club, choir ect is a great way to meet local people and practice some german! We gladly put you in contact with whatever hobby you would like to pursue. Please check the list of local clubs.

Ausländerbehörde, foreign office

The registration as an international or european citizen must take place via the Ausländerbehörde which is run by the Landkreis Harz or regional authority. All Information can be found here.

Kindergarten

In Saxony-Anhalt, the legal entitlement to childcare in childcare centres (crèche, kindergarten, after-school care) is regulated in the Child Support Act (KiFöG). Every child is entitled to a place in a daycare centre until they reach the 7th year of life. It is not compulsory but recommended. Daycare centres are intended to stimulate the physical, mental and emotional development of children, promote their social skills and compensate for disadvantages by providing general and educational support and educational opportunities. Children with disabilities or disadvantages in the social-emotional area should be specifically supported.

As the life situation of children and their families is undergoing rapid social change, children often grow up in very small families and the framework conditions in families are changing, daycare centres increasingly have to take on tasks that complement the family. The focus of the educational work of each daycare centre is anchored in concepts for the respective daycare centre. Integrative care for children with disabilities is possible in the daycare centres "Eigen-Sinn", "Sonnenkäfer" and in the Montessori Kinderhaus.

Application

In addition to the daycare centres run by the local authority, the World Heritage City of Quedlinburg also has daycare centres run by the AWO, Lebenshilfe, the DRK and the CVJM. The parents' right to choose is limited to the available capacities. It is recommended that parents arrange a meeting with the daycare centre of their choice before registering their child. A list of the Kindergarten can be found here under »Kindertagesstätten«.

Once you have decided on your Kindergarten of choice and have me with the Kindergarten, the registration takes place in Grünhagenhaus Markt 2. An appointment can also be made per email: kita@quedlinburg.de

Please bring with you:

Birth certificate,

- vaccination card (your child MUST be vaccinated against measels),
- medical examination booklet,
- Declaration of custody (if required) and
- child benefit certificate (Kindergeldbescheid) if you have one

The registration should take place at least one month before the date of admission. The cost of the Kindergarten that is run by the city of Quedlinburg can be found here

For Kindergarten that are not run by the city, please contact them directly.

Primary School

Pupils in grades 1 to 4 are taught in primary school. Primary school primarily teaches basic reading, writing and maths skills. In year 4, you will receive a non-binding school career recommendation for your child to choose a further educational programme. The school career recommendation serves as a guide; you are responsible for deciding on your child's future educational path. Attendance at primary school is compulsory for all children. We have 5 primary schools in Quedlinburg. To which school you can attend depends on where you live in Quedlinburg. Using this document please look for your street and the corresponding school: Schulbezirke der Grundschulen.

To register your child please contact the school secretary directly. The school contact information can be found here under »Grundschule«.

After school care

In Germany there is the possibility of after school care called "Hort". In order to have a Hort place, please contact the following people in the city administration. Click on the subject »Hort«.

Highschool

In Germany there are 2 levels of Highschool education divided into Gymnasium and Sekundarschule. Please inform yourself as to which school form fits to your child. The highschools in Quedlinburg can be found here under „Gymnasium“ and „Sekundarschulen“.

If you possess a dog, you must register the dog. Your dog will then be recorded in a central register. When you register your dog, you also register for dog tax. The dog tax is levied by the local authority. All information in German can be found here.
